Tilsatec’s Takeaways on the new ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 Standard
ANSI/ISEA has released the new edition of the 105 standard ANSI/ISEA 105: 2024.
Here, we explore what’s changed from 2016, key points to be aware of, and how it may impact you and your business.
ANSI/ISEA 105: 2024 Standard
ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 is the sixth edition of the American National Standard for hand and arm protection classification. First published in 1999, ANSI/ISEA 105 outlines the standards and classifications for the performance characteristics of occupational hand and arm protection. The classification system is designed to assist employers and end users in selecting the appropriate protective gloves and sleeves for specific workplace hazards, ensuring regulatory compliance.
The standard refers to the relevant test methods, specific criteria for conducting the tests and metrics for how the tests are scored. These outcomes provide end users key insight into whether the hand or arm protection meets their needs.
Key Takeaways
In the definitions section sleeves are now included with the inclusion of ”arm” protection (not just gloves). An important expansion of the PPE included.
Version updates to following standards:
-
ASTM D3884-09 (2017) Standard Guide for Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics
-
ASTM D3389-16 Standard Test Method for Coated Fabrics Abrasion Resistance
-
ASTM F1358-16, Standard Test Method for Effects of Flame Impingement on Materials Used in Protective Clothing Not Designated Primarily for Flame Protection
-
ASTM F2878-19 Standard Test Method for Protective Clothing Material Resistance to Hypodermic Needle Puncture
-
ASTM F2992-23 Standard Test Method for Measuring Cut Resistance of Materials Used in Protective Clothing with TDM-100 Test Equipment
-
EN ISO 21420:2020, Protective gloves – General requirements and test methods
-
EN 388:2016+A1:2018 Protective gloves against mechanical risks
An important addition has also been made to the following standard reference with a new section on compliance:
ANSI/ISEA 125-2021, American National Standard for Conformity Assessment of Safety and Personal Protective Equipment
Demonstration of conformity to the claimed classifications set forth in this standard shall be in accordance with ANSI/ISEA 125-2021. The manufacturer shall select the level of conformity assessment claimed, and such level shall be clearly indicated in any claim, in any form, that references compliance with ANSI/ISEA 125-2021.

Clarification of Testing Areas
Testing shall be performed on the primary protective area.
For gloves, the primary protective area is the palm, unless otherwise specified.
For sleeves, the primary protective area is the area just above the wrist elastic, unless otherwise specified.
NOTE: For a full arm-length sleeve, the area between the elbow and the shoulder may also be tested.
-
Cut resistance now tested to 2023 version of ASTM F2992
-
Needlestick puncture now tested to 2019 version of ASTM F2878
-
Abrasion resistance – clarification that for coated gloves, the product is tested until there is breakthrough on both the coating and liner. For uncoated gloves, breakthrough is determined at wear through sample.
-
Conductive heat resistance has an addition to the classification requirements - classification shall be at the temperature in which there is no evidence of charring, ignition, melting, dripping, and separation, and there is no shrinkage greater than 5%
-
Removal of vibration reduction from the standard
-
Removal of dexterity from the standard
-
Under report section, declaration of conformity may be included (in line with ANSI/ISEA 125-2021)
Product Labelling in the ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 Standard
The 2024 standard introduces a new pentagon-shaped pictogram, providing a clear visual representation of a glove's performance in abrasion, cut, and puncture resistance together in one single icon.
